Launching a career in cannabis science: Q&A with Raven Ariola
Q & A with Cannabis Educator, Raven Ariola
“Why I find the cannabis field so fascinating is that we’ve used cannabis for literally thousands of years, but right now, we have more questions than answers. And with every answer we get, we have even more questions. I love that it finds a way to humble all of us and make a student out of everybody.”
Raven Ariola is on a mission. As the new Program Director for Medicinal Plant Sciences (Cannabis Sciences) at Beal University, he’s dedicated to empowering students with the knowledge and skills to thrive in the burgeoning cannabis industry. His background is as diverse as the plant itself, with experience ranging from lab testing to non-profit work focused on patient education and stigma reduction. We sat down with Raven to discuss his passion for cannabis science and how Beal University is shaping the future of the cannabis workforce.
Q: Beal University is known for innovative programs. What drew you to this role?
A: When I saw the posting for the Cannabis Professor and Program Director position, it felt like a perfect fit. My background is in cannabis education, and I truly believe in the power of this plant. Beal University’s approach, with its year-round modules and focus on student empowerment, resonated deeply with me.
Q: You mentioned your journey into cannabis science began with a personal connection. Can you elaborate?
A: Absolutely. Growing up in West Virginia, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the war on drugs. People were getting arrested, and families were torn apart. Even though cannabis was never taboo in my household, seeing this disparity sparked a passion in me. I knew I wanted to dedicate my career to understanding and educating people about this misunderstood plant.
Q: You’ve worn many hats in the cannabis space, from working in a testing lab to running a non-profit. How has this diverse experience shaped your education approach?
A: It’s been invaluable. Working in a testing lab gave me hands-on experience with cultivation. My master’s in medical cannabis science and therapeutics fueled my understanding of the science of this plant. And through my non-profit work, I saw the immense need for education and accurate information. This blend of expertise allows me to create a well-rounded curriculum that equips students for success.
Q: What sets Beal University’s program apart?
A: Many programs focus solely on hands-on cultivation experience or offer cannabis education as an add-on. Beal University offers a range of degrees in Cannabis Science, Business, and Medicinal Plant Science. This flexibility allows students to tailor their education, whether they want a bachelor’s degree or to quickly enter the workforce. We also emphasize the “why” behind the “how.” We want students to understand the cultural nuances surrounding cannabis and become thought leaders who can shape the future of this industry.
Q: How do you stay on top of the dynamic cannabis landscape?
A: It’s a constant learning process. I actively participate in conferences, read industry publications and network with other professionals. It’s crucial to be part of the ongoing conversation and ensure our curriculum reflects the latest advancements and regulations.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in cannabis?
A: Cannabis is an industry that fosters a strong sense of community. If you’re passionate about this plant and want to work with something meaningful, then cannabis could be a great option. There are opportunities for everyone, regardless of background. Whether you’re interested in retail, law, or logistics, there’s a space for you to contribute your unique skills and talents.
Q: Which states do you see as the most promising markets for Beal University graduates?
A: California and Michigan are major players, but I also have my eye on states like Ohio and New York. These states are either newly legalized or have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, creating exciting opportunities for our graduates.
Q: Beal University is still relatively new to the cannabis education space. How do you plan to attract students?
A: Our graduates will have the knowledge and tools to navigate this dynamic industry. Showcasing the success stories of our alumni and obtaining endorsements from reputable cannabis companies will be key. Ultimately, we want to empower students to achieve their career goals within the cannabis space.
Raven Ariola’s dedication to cannabis education is infectious. With his wealth of experience and Beal University’s innovative program, the future for aspiring cannabis professionals looks bright. As the industry continues to blossom, Beal University graduates will be well-positioned, shaping the conversation, and paving the way for a brighter future.
